NEW ORLEANS – A pair of come from behind victories by seniors
Hossam Meligy and
Abdelrahman Zaki allowed the New Orleans men's tennis team complete a 7-0 shutout of Jackson State on Thursday at the University Tennis Center.
Meligy was the first of the duo to complete his match for UNO (10-10), rallying from a set down for a 6-7, 6-1, 10-3 result over Hernan Geria of JSU (4-14) at the No. 5 position. A little while later, Zaki followed a similar path for a 3-6, 7-6, 10-5 win over Jose Luque on the No. 3 court.
Fellow seniors
Ricardo Campos,
Vinay Kamineni and
Dominik Kardell were also victorious in singles' play as the Privateers put in their finale tune-up prior to next week's Southland Conference tennis tournament.
Campos picked up a 6-1, 6-2 win over Carlos Martinez at the No. 2 court with Kamineni and Kardell posting straight set wins at the No. 4 and No. 6 positions, respectively. Sophomore
Rui Silva rounded out the positive results for UNO with a straight set victory on the No. 1 court.
The day started with the Privateers sweeping the three doubles' matches. Meligy and Campos completed a 7-4 regular season campaign with a victory at the No. 1 court. Kamineni and Zaki improved to 3-1 with a win at No. 2 while
David Malmgren partnered with Silva for a victory at No. 3.
The UNO men's tennis team will likely be seeded No. 2 in the Southland Conference tournament, which would put the squad in a 10 a.m. semifinal match on Saturday, Apr. 27 against Nicholls State.
