Tennis to Open 2014 at Jackson State

JACKSON, Miss. – The New Orleans Privateers men's and women's tennis teams officially kick off their 2014 schedule when both squads face SWAC foe, Jackson State on Friday, Jan. 31.

The Privateers men's team was scheduled to start last weekend with two matches in Houston, but inclement weather forced the postponement of matches vs. Texas-Arlington and Rice.

"I think unfortunately it's one of those things you have no control over," said Head Coach Burzis Kanga. "We were going to play two of what I consider respectable teams. It was a short week for us because of the weather, but we have to take the right mindset and be ready to compete."

New Orleans women's squad is coming off an 8-11 season in 2012-13. However, they had a strong close taking five of their last six matches including the season finale against the Tigers. The women's team will be led by sophomore, Soledad Calderon Arroyo.

In her freshman season, Arroyo won a team-high 16 matches and 14 matches during dual season. Arroyo was part of the late-season charge for the Privateers, winning eight of her last ten matches.

"Soledad has played really well amongst her colleagues. She is playing at a high level, and I expect her along with Marta Sans to lead the charge. The good thing is they recognize we have depth on this women's team," said Kanga.

It's a young squad overall, but Kanga is excited about the potential this team brings. Kanga also feels each one of his players will be looked to in a leadership role as the season progresses.

"Someone like Anna Segarra Rius is a grinder, and a baseline player like Marta Sans. She is someone who is very focused and determined. I think Yasmine Richard and Grace Nolan, even though they're freshmen they bring a junior tennis background. The new players add depth, make us more competitive, and contribute very well to our doubles lineup," said Kanga.

The match against Jackson State is set for 2 p.m.
