Privateers Tennis Teams Both Defeat Jackson State

JACKSON, Miss. – The New Orleans Privateers men's and women's teams capped off a successful opening match of the 2014 season as they both defeated Jackson State by a 6-1 margin on Friday.

The Privateers men (1-0) won the doubles point by winning matches 2 and 3. Blake Gregor and Romain Lefevre won their match 6-2. Christoffer Appelgren and Rui Silva teamed up for a 6-1 victory in their doubles match. In singles, all five Privateers won their matches except for Timo Kranz. The junior transfer from North Florida had to retire in his match against Kashyap Ashok due to a back injury sustained while in the second set. Kranz, who was playing the No. 1 position, had taken the first set 6-2.

Said Coach Burzis Kanga about Kranz's injury, "I feel sad for Timo. It's been a recurring injury and we'll more than likely sit him out tomorrow."

The rest of the Privateers men's squad had relatively easy times in their singles matches. All of them finished their respective opponents in straight sets. Rui Silva, who was looked at to lead the charge on a team that lost five seniors from last year's squad that went to the Southland Championship, defeated Ryan Swanier 6-3, 6-0 while playing the No. 2 position.

"I felt mentally across the board we were really strong today against a good Jackson State team," said Kanga. "The big thing is they came out mentally on top of their game."

The Privateers women (1-0) opened their season with a solid 6-1 victory as well. New Orleans took the doubles point then took five out of six singles matches. The only defeat suffered was when Marta Sans was bested 6-4, 6-2 by Julie Angermann on the No. 3 court.

"The team played really well on a fast surface and came out really strong. Now we'll get ready for Alcorn State tomorrow," said Kanga.

The match against Alcorn State is scheduled to begin at 12 p.m.
