Privateers Tennis Teams Improve to 2-0

LORMAN, Miss. – The New Orleans Privateers men's and women's tennis both improved to 2-0 on the season, with each notching wins against Alcorn State on Saturday afternoon.

The Privateers women (2-0) prevailed 4-1 in their match up, while the Privateers men (2-0) secured the 4-0 victory.  With the doubles point in favor of New Orleans, both matches were ended once the third win was recorded in singles play.

For the Privateers women, the match started with a sweep of the doubles matches as Soledad Calderon and Yasmine Rashad got the 6-3 victory in the No. 1 spot, while Grace Nolan and Marta Sans secured the doubles advantage with an easy 6-1 finish.

In singles play, Calderon kept on with the hot racket by defeating Sumera Kamil, 6-3, 6-0, at No. 2 singles.  Sans followed with a 6-1, 6-2 victory at No. 3, and Hafsa Laraibi won the match with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Anna Kazarina.  Rashad and Segarra did not finish their matches with the game already in hand.

The Privateers men won the doubles point, but it was not easy as it came down to a tiebreaker at No. 1 with Gonzolo Garcia and Daniel Populos edging out Ernesto Santilian and Lucas Moruiac 6-5 (7-5).

After doubles action, the Privateers men were perfect in singles with Rui Silva starting things off with a 6-4, 6-3 win at No. 1, which was followed by Blake Gregor claiming No. 3 singles with his opponent retiring in the second set.  Gregor was already up 6-1 after the first set.

The only other match that was finished was a hard-fought 6-5 (9), 6-1 win by Christoffer Applegren at the No. 5 spot in the order.  Applegren's win sealed the match, and all other singles were suspended.

New Orleans next time out will both squads home debut, with both hosting Arkansas Pine-Bluff on Sunday, February 9.
