NEW ORLEANS, La. – The New Orleans Privateers men's tennis team won the doubles point, but could not sustain the same momentum in singles action in a 5-2 loss to Incarnate Word on Sunday afternoon at the Tennis Center.
The Privateers (5-7, 1-3 Southland) got off to a great start by taking two of three from the Cardinals (11-4, 1-2 Southland) in doubles. The duo of
Christoffer Appelgren and
Rui Silva proved true at No. 2 doubles with a 8-4 victory, while
Gonzalo Garcia and Luis Alburquerque were equally as deadly at No. 3 with a 8-6 win to give New Orleans the doubles point for the second time in a conference match.
However, the Cardinals were angry birds in singles action by taking five of the six matches from the Privateers with Appelgren registering the only win. Appelgren's victory was a 6-2, 6-0 bright spot at No. 6 over Brody Rodriguez, as he improved to 3-1 in league play.
Although
Blake Gregor and Silva both took losses, each came at the hand of three sets with Gregor playing out two tie-breaker sets against Tucker Brown at No. 4. Gregor lost 5-7, 6-4, 7-5 in his match.
The Privateers will not be back in action until April 11 when the team host Lamar at the Tennis Center. First serve is set for 2 p.m.
