BEAUMONT, Texas – The New Orleans Privateers women's tennis team (3-4, 1-1 Southland) lost a narrow battle 4-3 to the Lamar Lady Cardinals (3-4, 1-0) on Saturday at the Thompson Family Tennis Center.
The day started with the Privateers notching a win in the second doubles match as
Soledad Calderon Arroyo and
Marta Sans combined to win 8-7. However, Lamar took the surrounding two matches at 8-2 on the first court and 8-4 on the third court to secure the doubles point.
In singles play,
Anna Segarra Rius continued her winning streak by taking a victory at the 3 position. Though Rius dropped a set for the first time in singles play, she was able to win the final set 7-5 and secure one of three singles victories for New Orleans.
Arroyo also took a three-set victory at the 2 position by winning a tiebreak 9-7 to take down the final set. Coming in, Arroyo had lost three straight singles matches while playing at both the 1 and 2 position. This weekend, Arroyo has taken both singles and doubles matches.
Yasmine Rashad provided the final Privateers point in singles play with a win a three-set win at the 6 position. Rashad took the final set 6-3. However, the match was decided in part when
Marta Sans was beaten in three sets at the 4 position after losing the deciding set 6-2.
New Orleans will return home to take on SIU-Edwardsville on Sunday for the third match in as many days. The match at the University Tennis Center will begin at 2 p.m.
