NEW ORLEANS, La. – The New Orleans Privateers women's tennis team defeated SIU-Edwardsville 4-3 on Sunday afternoon at the Tennis Center, but the men's team did not have the same outcome against the Cougars, falling 4-3.
The Privateers women's tennis team (4-4) gutted out a gritty match with SIU Edwardsville (5-5) by bouncing back from losing the doubles point. The only duo to emerge victorious was the tag team of
Soledad Calderon Arroyo and
Marta Sans. Calderon Arroyo and Sans downed Mia Frogner and Kali Donner in a close match, 8-7.
New Orleans made up for its misfortunes in doubles be playing determined tennis in singles. Calderon Arroyo continued her tirade at No. 1 singles, winning 6-0, 6-3 to start off the action.
Anna Segarra Rius then defeated Lexi Aranda at No. 2 by the score of 7-5, 6-2 to give the Privateers the advantage.
The next two points for the Privateers came from
Hafsa Laraibi and Yasmine Rashad – each winning in three sets to give New Orleans the victory. Laraibi defeated Kali Donner at No. 4 singles, 3-6, 6-3, 6-3 and Rashad downed Haley Icewicz at No. 5, 4-6, 6-4, 6-2.
The women pick up conference play next on the black top, hosting Abilene Christian on Wednesday, March 12 at 2 p.m.
The Privateers men's tennis team (4-4) followed suit with the women, putting on a gutsy effort, but were on the wrong end of a 4-3 decision against SIU Edwardsville (6-5). Like the women, the men lost the doubles point with Rui Silva and Christoffer Appelgren teaming for the only winning duo. Silva and Appelgren defeated Patrick Gaffigan and Matthew Hutchingson, 8-7, for the Privateers only win in doubles.
Picking up wins in singles play for the Privateers were Gonzolo Garcia, Blake Gregor, and Appelgren. Garcia knocked off Hutchingson, 6-2, 6-1 at No. 2, Gregor notched a two-set victory over Jacob Perkins, 6-2, 6-2 at No. 4, and Appelgren rounded out the Privateers at No. 6 with a 6-2, 6-2 defeat of Patrick Gaffigan.
Along with the women's team, the men will pick up action on Wednesday, March 12 against conference foe Abilene Christian at the University Tennis Center. First serve is set for 2 p.m.
