CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – The New Orleans Privateers men's tennis team fell 4-0 to No. 1 Texas A&M-Corpus Christi in the first round of Southland Tournament on Saturday afternoon.
"I am proud of the way they fought today. This match could have gone either way, really. In singles matches, we went the distance and gave it our best," said Head Coach
Burzis Kanga. "At number one and six, the match scores were not indicative of how close the match was."
"I feel that the players showed up to play, and realized how close we can be to win the conference. I am very proud to have coached these great young men."
The Privateers (6-11, 2-5 Southland) took the Islanders (18-9, 7-0 Southland) to the brink in many of the matches, but the regular season champions had momentum on their home court. All of the matches had at least one tiebreaker set that included a 28-point tiebreaker at No. 4 singles.
Blake Gregor was on the wrong end of the 28-point affair, but bounced back to take the next set before having his match nulled due to the overall dual being decided.
Gonzalo Garcia suffered the same outcome, taking Ricardo Mayagoitia to three sets at No. 2 before having his match unfinished. Romaine Lefevre also went through a hard fought three-set match at No. 5 with Guillaume Rauseo edging out a 6-0, 6-7 (3-7), 7-6 (7-4) victory.
