Women's Tennis Looks for Tenth Win of Season Against Islanders

NEW ORLEANS, La. – The New Orleans Privateers women's tennis team (9-6, 2-3) takes back to the court and back to conference play against the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Islanders (6-6, 0-2) on Tuesday at the University Tennis Center. The match is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.

The Privateers were to face Southern Miss on Sunday, but the match was rained out. It was the second time New Orleans and the Golden Eagles tried to schedule a match, but both times were unsuccessful due to weather. New Orleans' last time on the court was a home victory against Bradley last Wednesday.

New Orleans has been especially tough at home this season, going 7-1 at the University Tennis Center including last Wednesday's win over the Braves. So far in the spring, New Orleans has collectively won 63 percent of their singles matches (53-31) and all six players on the roster are above .500 in singles. Two players are in double figures in wins and nobody has fewer than eight wins in singles.

Anja Luethi has turned in three straight victories to move her record to 8-7 this spring. Luethi is in her first year of collegiate competition and has been used at the top half of the rotation, primarily playing at the 2 spot. Seven of Luethi's eight victories this season have come in straight sets.

Hafsa Laraibi has the team's longest active winning streak at four straight matches. Laraibi has also teamed with Yasmine Rashad in doubles to go 7-4 at the 3 position. The Privateers' three doubles pairs have remained unchanged the entire season and have combined for a 22-12 record.

The Islanders women's team has gone on a slide entering this week, losing four straight. After starting off the month with road losses at Houston and Texas-Arlington, the Islanders opened conference play at home, dropping matches to Stephen F. Austin and Northwestern State.

Like the Privateers, the Islanders have also used the same three doubles combinations all spring. In singles, Maider Martin has notched an 8-3 record with all matches coming at the 4 spot. Chelsea Horan is the only Islander to have won both conference singles matches and is 5-5 this season.
