NEW ORLEANS, La. – The New Orleans Privateers women's tennis team (10-7, 2-4 Southland) enters a rigorous weekend of conference play, starting with a match against Northwestern State Lady Demons (8-7, 4-1) on Friday at the University Tennis Center. The Privateers will then turn their attention to Stephen F. Austin who is currently unbeaten in conference play.
The Privateers picked up their 10
th win of the season and their fourth 7-0 sweep by dropping Lindenwood on Wednesday.
Soledad Calderon Arroyo became the third player this year to notch 10 singles victories in the non-conference tilt. Calderon is 10-5 in singles this season and has won three straight.
Calderon has also partnered with
Marta Sans to go 9-3 in doubles matches. As a team, the Privateers have won 64.1 percent of their doubles matches and all three tandems have maintained a winning record heading into the weekend.
Last season, the Privateers fell to both opponents they will play this weekend. New Orleans fell 5-2 at Northwestern State and was swept 4-0 at Stephen F. Austin. Last season marked the first loss by the Privateers against the Lady Demons since 1996.
Northwestern State enters with a seven-match winning streak just broken against Stephen F. Austin. On the year, the Lady Demons are 3-5 on the road. The Lady Demons have been solid in doubles, winning the doubles point in 9 of 14 matches. Tatiana Larina and Natalya Krutova are ranked 60
th in the nation in doubles and are 10-1 this spring.
Stephen F. Austin (10-5, 4-0) just had a five-match winning streak of their own busted in their last outing, losing 4-2 to non-conference foe, Louisiana Tech. Prior to that loss, the Ladyjacks had triumphs over conference opponents, Incarnate Word, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, Abilene Christian, and Northwestern State. The Ladyjacks also defeated a non-conference foe in Texas-San Antonio.
Friday's match against Northwestern State will be at 11 a.m. The Privateers will face Stephen F. Austin on Saturday at 10 a.m.
