The New Orleans Privateers women's basketball team (5-10, 2-4 Southland) will be on the road for the first time in two weeks when they travel to take on the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Islanders (4-13, 1-5) on Saturday. Tip is scheduled for 4:30 p.m. at the American Bank Center.
Â
The Privateers fell to Central Arkansas 59-44 in their last outing. New Orleans was able to limit the Sugar Bears to just a 34.7 percent clip from the field, but could only manage 39 shots in the loss.
Shania Woods led the Privateers with 12 points, landing one shy of tying a season best. Woods also added two blocks.
Â
In conference only games, the Privateers have steadily moved up the chart in points allowed. Entering Saturday, New Orleans is sixth in the conference in scoring defense, giving up an average of 63.2 points per game. The 59 points allowed on Thursday marked the third time New Orleans held a Southland opponent under 60.
Â
This will be the fourth all-time meeting between both sides. The Islanders have won all three previous meetings (two in Corpus Christi). In the last outing, the Islanders defeated the Privateers 66-52 on Feb. 12, 2015. The teams will meet again back at the Lakefront Arena on Feb. 11.
Â
"You can't look at anybody's record. On any night, everyone is going to give us their best. I know Corpus hasn't gotten off to a great start, but I expect them to give us their best. We start preparing in the beginning of the week so we'll try to correct those things we need to correct on Saturday," said Coach
Keeshawn Davenport.
Â
The Islanders are coming in after breaking an 11-game losing streak with a 69-67 win over Southeastern. It was a contest that saw Texas A&M-Corpus Christi get outscored by 12 in the fourth quarter, but hang on to win their first conference game. Camesha Davis scored the game-winning bucket with 19 seconds remaining.
Â
Davis is the team's leading rebounder and shot blocker. Davis had a season-best 23 points against Angelo State on Dec. 11. Thursday's win against Southeastern marked the second time Davis pulled down at least 10 rebounds in a game.
Â
Royce Chadwick is in his 32
nd season as a head coach and his fourth at Corpus Christi. With the Islanders' first win of the season, Chadwick reached a milestone, collecting win number 600 for his career. Chadwick has also coached at Marshall, Stephen F. Austin, Sam Houston State, Oklahoma Panhandle State, and Howard Junior College.
