BATON ROUGE, Louisiana – The trio of freshman

Kohi Brignac and sophomore
Nick Schiro set school records in the 60-meter hurdles, women's weight and men's weight, respectively, to lead a solid season-opening effort by the University of New Orleans track and field team on Friday in the Purple Tiger Invitational at LSU's Carl Maddox Fieldhouse.
Nicholls twice broke Bradley Rose's mark of 8:18 with an 8:13 in the preliminaries before clocking an 8:11 in the finals to finish second in the meet.
"They did well overall," head coach
Benjamin Dalton said. "It was a good first meet for everybody. It was a bit of an eye opener for some, but we had a bunch of PRs and three school records. The new kids did really, really great and the two hurdlers did very well. You can't really complain when you start off with a bunch of PRs, but we're going to just try and get better from here."
 He was one of five UNO student-athletes to post top 10 individual performances as junior Alexia Fortenberry finished seventh in the women's 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.60. The junior tandom of Fadeke Adeola was tied for third in the women's high jump at an elevation of 1.63 meters and Alireza Rafiei was 10th in the shot put with a throw of 14.91 meters, and sophomore Shehu Inuwa was eighth in the men's 800 meters.Senior
Callie Willcox led UNO's women's team with an 11:35.59 in the 3000-meter run to post a 12th-place showing. On the men's side, junior
Edmund Pine paced UNO with a 9:25.93 in the 3000 meters  to come in 15th.
The Privateers return to action on Friday, Jan. 15, when they head to Birmingham, Alabama, for the UAB Blazer Invitational. The UAB meet is the second of five indoor meets for UNO, which will host the Privateer Invitational in Birmingham on Jan. 31, while participating in the South Alabama Invitational on Feb. 7 before taking part in the Southland Conference Indoor Championship from Feb. 15-16.
