Women's Basketball Opens Home Slate Against Blue Mountain College

Privateers look toward first win of the season

New Orleans, Louisiana- The University of New Orleans women's basketball team will open its home schedule Tuesday, Nov.15, at Lakefront Arena against Blue Mountain College.  Tipoff is set for 7 pm.

For the Privateers there's no place like home after suffering setbacks on the road to Alabama, 78-57, and Southern Mississippi, 78-53.

"It will be good to play at home in the friendly confines of Lakefront Arena," says head coach Keeshawn Davenport.  "Our focus is always to protect home."

UNO defeated LSU-Alexandria 93-75 in the home opener last season and had a 7-6 record at home in 2015-16.

New Orleans got outstanding performances over the weekend against Alabama and Southern Miss from guard Randi Brown. The junior had 26 points and 5 rebounds against the Tide.  She followed that outing with 18 points, 4 rebounds and 2 assists versus Southern Mississippi.  Her performances earned her recognition as College Sports Madness Southland Conference Women's Player of the Week.

"I thought she did an outstanding job against Southern Miss.  Dealing with a box and one and still come up with 18 points, that's a pretty decent night," said Davenport.

The Privateers got a pleasant surprise from sophomore guard Danielle Wright against USM.  Wright canned a career high 15 points and grabbed 5 rebounds.  Her previous career high was 8 points last season against Ole Miss.

Sophomore center Shania Woods had 9 points and 6 rebounds for the Privateers against USM and her younger sister, freshman Asia Woods, who got the start in her first collegiate game, had 11 points and 6 rebounds against Alabama.

Blue Mountain College in Blue Mountain, Mississippi is a National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics member school competing in the Southern States Athletic Conference.  The Toppers are 1-1 after defeating Williams Baptist College 66-54 as Matavia Cox led four double figure scorers with 17 points.  Blue Mountain's defeat came at the hands of Freed-Hardeman, ranked eighth nationally among NAIA schools.  The Toppers put a scare into the traditional NAIA power but fell, 80-78.

"We overlook no opponent.  Blue Mountain is a scrappy team and they are going to come in a play hard.  We have to have the same focus we'll have for Texas or Iowa or any other opponent."
