NEW ORLEANS –
Anna Segarra Rius and
Soledad Calderon Arroyo sealed the doubles point for the University of New Orleans women's tennis team (4-0) who completed their fourth 7-0 sweep as they defeated the Alcorn State Lady Braves (0-6) on Saturday at the University Tennis Center.
Â
The opening point of the match was tilted to New Orleans' favor early as
Paula Garriga Ullate and
Brittany Johnson flexed their muscle early and got out to a 4-1 lead. Garriga and Johnson eventually finished their match at 6-1.
Â
Segarra and Calderon had an early break to take a 2-0 lead, but Alcorn State's top pair of Ivana Boberic and Ekaterina Potapova rallied back to tie the match at 2-2. Segarra and Calderon trailed 40-0 in the next game, but stormed back to hold serve and controlled the rest of the match to win 6-2 and seal the first point.
Â
"This is a good group of players and they're experienced now so when they're in these difficult situations, they do a good job of coming back and putting the match in their favor," said Coach
Burzis Kanga. "I'm pleased with the way they played their doubles point and how they executed in singles."
Â
In singles,
Trang Dao,
Anja Luethi, and
Hafsa Laraibi finished their matches with ease. Luethi asserted command and used an array of shots to keep her opponent off balance early in the first set. Luethi wound up winning 6-0, 6-2.
Â
Dao finished up with a clean sweep at 6-0, 6-0 over Potapova. In #5 singles, Laraibi won her first set without conceding a game and notched her third singles win of the season when she took the second set 6-1. So far on the season, the Privateers as a team have lost just two sets in singles play and have not lost a doubles match.
Â
The next match for the Privateers will be their second trip to Baton Rouge when they face LSU on Feb. 24 at 7 p.m.
