BOX SCOREBATON ROUGE, La. – The University of New Orleans women's tennis team (4-1) suffered their first defeat against No. 19-ranked LSU (10-3) by a 7-0 count on Wednesday evening at the LSU Tennis Complex.
The Tigers endured an early push by the Privateers top tandem of
Anja Luethi and
Trang Dao in doubles. LSU pulled away to what was a comfortable win for the first point when they took the match at #1 doubles 6-2 and #2 doubles at 6-1.
In singles, the highest ranked Tiger in Joana Vale Costa flexed her muscle for a 6-0, 6-0 win. Costa was ranked 20
th in singles in the nation heading into Wednesday and picked up a win earlier in the day against Tulane.
Dao saw an early lead in the second set, but was eventually defeated by Ella Taylor at #4 singles. Ryann Foster's victory at #3 singles wound up sealing the match for LSU and gave the Tigers their second victory in as many years over UNO.
Anna Segarra Rius played a few long games in the first set and presented a strong early challenge for Jessica Golovin who is ranked 46
th in the country. However, after Segarra lost the first set 6-4, she lost the second set at 6-0.
The Privateers will next face Lamar to open conference play on Saturday. The match is scheduled for a 10 a.m. start.
