NEW ORLEANS – The first weekend saw the University of New Orleans women's tennis team win two matches. Now the Privateers (2-0) look to carry that momentum into a Saturday tilt with the Jackson State Lady Tigers (1-2) on Saturday at the University Tennis Center. The match is scheduled for 2 p.m.
The Privateers dismissed a short-handed Loyola squad by a 7-0 count on Friday. Following that up, New Orleans turned around 24 hours later and dealt the same score line to defending SWAC regular season champion, Southern.
The trio of freshmen in
Trang Dao,
Brittany Johnson, and
Paula Garriga Ullate helped boost the Privateers against Loyola. The lineup was shuffled around against Southern, which Coach
Burzis Kanga has said will be a theme going forward. "We're going to change the lineup a little. There will be a constant rotation in this lineup because we have good depth. We'll look forward to the challenge and we have to be ready to play."
Anja Luethi was the only Privateer to participate in both singles and doubles in the Privateers' two opening duals. Luethi went 2-0 in singles and partnered with Dao for a doubles win versus Loyola. The same combination's doubles match against Southern went unfinished after the Privateers had already secured the doubles point.
Jackson State started the season off with a bang, defeating Jacksonville State in their season opener. Since then, the Lady Tigers have dropped a pair of 7-0 decisions to Samford and South Alabama. Since 1997, Jackson State and the Privateers have met 10 times. New Orleans has won those 10 prior meetings.
