NEW ORLEANS – The University of New Orleans women's tennis team (8-2, 4-1 Southland) enters a two-match road weekend against the Northwestern State Lady Demons on Friday and the Stephen F. Austin Lady Jacks on Saturday.
The Privateers had their last outing against Abilene Christian postponed due to rain in the area. The last time UNO hit the court, they suffered their first conference loss 6-1 to the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Islanders. Both of UNO's losses this spring have come on the road.
"We're going to play a tough Northwestern team and we'll have a different lineup, but everyone has to do their job," said Coach
Burzis Kanga. "We have a solid team and they're all accountable. This is an important weekend for us."
The Privateers have lost their last four meetings against Northwestern State (5-9, 1-3) after winning the previous eight. UNO last played the Lady Demons in the semifinals of the Southland Conference tournament in 2015 where Northwestern State prevailed by a 4-2 margin.
Stephen F. Austin (8-6, 2-2) got out to a 5-0 start on the spring campaign, but have lost six of their last nine matches. The last outing for the Lady Jacks was a 4-3 victory at Northwestern State on March 20. "With Stephen F. Austin, they're going to be teams in the mix and this is an opportunity for us to get wins to help seeding. I have no doubt that we'll be ready to go this weekend," said Kanga.
UNO's last time on the court against Stephen F. Austin was also the site of their first win over the Lady Jacks. The Privateers outlasted Stephen F. Austin 4-3 in the opening round of the conference tournament last season.
