NACOGDOCHES, Texas – The University of New Orleans women's tennis team (8-4, 4-3 Southland) won the doubles point, but could not carry the momentum into singles in a 6-1 loss to the Stephen F. Austin Lady Jacks (10-6, 4-2) on Saturday at the Schlief Tennis Complex.
Soledad Calderon Arroyo and
Anna Segarra Rius turned in a 6-4 victory over Stephen F. Austin's top pair of Dhanielly Quevedo and Lauren Hidalgo-Smith. The Privateers also got a victory from the freshman tandem of
Brittany Johnson and
Paula Garriga Ullate who won 6-3 at No. 3 doubles.
However, Stephen F. Austin turned the tide by winning all of the singles matches in straight sets. The top three players in the Lady Jacks rotation did not drop more than five games in their respective victories on the afternoon.
The closest match was contested at No. 5 singles. Johnson looked to pick up another singles victory on the weekend, but fell on the short end of two marathon sets, losing 7-5, 7-6 to Vanesa Calvo Pardo. UNO has lost three straight.
The Privateers are back in action on Monday when they return home to face Grambling. The match is set for a 2 p.m. start.
