Women's Tennis Coasts Past Incarnate Word, Moves Conference Mark to 3-0

BOX SCORE

NEW ORLEANS
– The University of New Orleans women's tennis team has vaulted to a 3-0 start in Southland play after completing a 7-0 sweep over the Incarnate Word Cardinals (2-7, 0-1) on Friday at the University Tennis Center. UNO has also run their overall record to 7-1.

Brittany Johnson and Paula Garriga Ullate started at #3 doubles and provided a spark for UNO out of te gate. The freshman tandem combined to get out to a 3-1 start and finished off their opponent by a 6-3 margin. At #2 doubles, Soledad Calderon Arroyo and Anna Segarra Rius kicked into high gear in short order on their way to a 6-2 win to seal the first point of the day.

"There are eight players on this team who can play with anyone on any given day," said Coach Burzis Kanga. "Two and three took care of their spots so we started off with that doubles point. In singles, after a conversation with our two #1 doubles players, they lifted their game and now we get ready for Sunday."

In singles, the Privateers kept their foot on the throttle throughout. Trang Dao was the first to finish for UNO. After battling to a 6-2 win in the first set, Dao dominated the second set. Segarra was switched into the #1 spot and responded with a 6-1, 6-2 victory. The clinching point was earned by Anja Luethi who coasted to a 6-1, 6-1 win.

"I'm happy where we are right now," said Kanga. "I'm excited about playing Central Arkansas on Sunday. The schedule has worked well for us as we move forward and I'm convinced this group of players can do anything they want."

The Privateers will return to the court on Sunday against Central Arkansas. The match is scheduled for an 11 a.m. start at the University Tennis Center.
