NEW ORLEANS – The University of New Orleans women's tennis team (14-4, 7-3 Southland) can seal a two-seed in the conference tournament in their final conference match, which takes place against the Abilene Christian Wildcats (20-6, 9-2) on Saturday at Rice University. The match is scheduled for 1 p.m.
The Privateers capped off a 3-0 week with a 4-2 victory over McNeese State on Sunday. UNO also gained wins over Louisiana Tech and Nicholls. With everyone else's conference slate finished, the Privateers face a situation where a win automatically locks them into the second spot in the tournament. A loss would put UNO in a four-way tiebreak with McNeese State, Stephen F. Austin, and Northwestern State.
Anja Luethi was named Southland Women's Tennis Player of the Week on Tuesday for her 5-0 week between singles and doubles. Luethi is 11-4 in singles this spring and has won three straight. In doubles, Luethi and
Trang Dao have been equally as tough, posting a 9-2 mark.
The Privateers have five players with double digit wins in singles heading into their penultimate match.
Hafsa Laraibi leads the way with 12 victories and also has the longest active winning streak at six entering the weekend.
UNO was originally scheduled to host this match back on March 18, but it was rained out and subsequently moved to a neutral site. The Privateers have a team winning percentage of .657 in singles and .732 in doubles.
Abilene Christian has been led by two players who have undefeated conference records. Lucile Pothier and Whitney Williams are both 10-0 against conference opponents entering play. Pothier has played the majority of her matches at No. 3 while Williams has mostly featured at No. 5 singles.
