Track & Field Sets 2 Meet Marks At Southeastern Lion Invitational

Fortenberry wins women’s 100 hurdles at 13.55, Willcox claims women’s 3000 title at 10:38.94

HAMMOND, Louisiana –
Senior Callie Willcox set a meet record in the women's 3000 with a season-best mark of 10:38.94 and junior Alexia Fortenberry established a meet record of her own with a 13.55 in the women's 100-meter hurdles as the University of New Orleans track and field teams enjoyed a stellar outing at the Southeastern Lion Invitational on Saturday at the Southeastern Louisiana Track Complex.

Both Fortenberry and Willcox earned individual wins with their record-setting performances, and Willcox' mark was the fastest in the history of the facility. Not to be left out, freshman Michael Nicholls also posted the best showing by an attached individual in the men's 110-meter hurdles with a 14.33 to come in second overall behind unattached Joshua Thompson's 13.87.

Willcox' effort in the 3000 was one of nine season-best performance by the Privateers on Saturday. Also posting season-best marks for the UNO women's team were junior Chelise Brown in the 200 meters and senior Rebecca Callaway in the 800. Brown came in fifth with a time of 24.73 while Callaway was 14th at 2:37.11.

On the men's side, freshman Quintarius Queen had a season-best 22.25 in the 200-meter dash to finish 11th while junior Michael Batson and sophomore Shehu Inuwa followed suit in the 400 with respective times of 49.63 to finish sixth and 53.39 to come in 18th. Junior Edmund Pine added to the season-best list with a 4:10.49 in the 1500 with fellow juniors Clayton O'Callaghan and Dario Scantlebury doing the same in the 3000 with a 9:08.20 and in the 400 hurdles at 54.26. Both O'Callaghan and Scantlebury's times were good enough for fifth-place finishes.

Queen also led New Orleans in the 100 with a 10.95 to cross the finish line 14th. Pine paced the Privateers in the 800 with a 2:01.73 to finish 13th and junior Jared Robertson clocked a team-leading 4:06.45 to finish 12th in the 1500. Junior Alireza Rafiei headlined the men's field efforts with a fifth-place showing in the shot put with a heave of 14.90 meters and an 11th-place effort in the discus with a toss of 42.39 meters. Sophomore Nick Schiro, meanwhile, led the way for UNO in the javelin with a throw of 49.68 meters to come in 12th.

The record-setting effort of Willcox in the women's 3000 was the top half of a 1-2 finish for the Privateers in the event as junior Emily Martinez also surpassed the former meet record with a 10:43.77. In addition to her season-best effort in the 200, Brown also led the UNO women in the 100 with a 12.13 to finish sixth while junior Ariel Scioneax posted a No. 31 effort in the 400 at 1:06.78.

Junior Fadeke Adeola paced the women's field performers with a second-place finish in the high jump with a leap of 1.65 meters. Freshman Jordan Courtois led UNO in the pole vault by clearing 3.20 meters to finish 12th and junior Farydah Inoussa logged a team-best 28.75-meter toss in the javelin to come in 13th.

New Orleans returns to action on Saturday, April 23, when the Privateers travel to Baton Rouge for the LSU Alumni Gold on April 23. From there, the Privateers will head to Corpus Christi, Texas, for the Southland Conference Championship from May 4-7.
