Auburn, Alabama – Brittany Johnson, a junior from Jennings, Louisiana won the Flight "B" Consolation section at the Southern ITA Regional Tennis Championships over the weekend in Auburn, Alabama.
The graduate of Iota (La.) High School defeated Stella Carra of McNeese in the quarter final round, 7-6, (2),6-4 and she disposed of Caroline Kelly of Mississippi State 6-3,6-7(8-6), 10-6 in the semifinal. Johnson won by forfeit when Phonexay Chitdara of McNeese withdrew.
"I just went in a played like I had nothing to lose. I was disappointed that my competitor withdrew because I really wanted to play her," said Johnson. "It was my first regional tournament and I wanted to prove to Coach that the team deserved to be there and I deserved to be there."
Johnson, a Hotel, Restaurant and Tourism major, said the semifinal win over Kelly of Mississippi State was the most exciting part of her first regional competition.
"It's a testament to her work ethic," said head tennis coach
Burzis Kanga. "Brittany works really hard and she's persistent. She has a great future and she still needs to keep working but we are very proud of her."
"I'm really looking forward to the rest of the season," Johnson continued. "My teammates are playing great and we're really excited about the rest of the season!"
The next time the Privateers will hit the court will be at the George Fourmaux Fed Cup Invitational in Hammond, Louisiana, November 3-5, at the University of Southeastern Louisiana Tennis Complex.
