NEW ORLEANS –
The University of New Orleans women's tennis team began the home portion of its 2017 schedule on Friday afternoon, besting Alcorn State 7-0 for the Privateers first win of the season.

Senior Anna Segarra Rius claimed victories in both singles and doubles play, giving her a final career mark of 3-0 against the Braves in singles action and 2-0 in doubles play.
"I was very pleased with how we played today," head coach Burzis Kanga said. "When we play the way we did today, we can compete against any team in the country. We came in ready to defend our home courts and thats what we did."

The Privateers (1-1) earned the doubles points with victories at the first and second position, with the match at the third slot leaning in UNO's favor. The duo of junior Anja Luethi and Rius overpowered their Alcorn State (0-1) counterparts 6-1. At the second flight, sophomore Trang Dao and senior Yasmine Rashad claimed their first win as a pair 6-2 victory. In an unfinished match due to the Privateers claiming two of the three matches, sophomore Brittany Johnson and freshman Claudette Gilhespie held a 4-2 advantage on the third court before their contest was called off.

In singles play, Dao got revenge on Daria Chemodanova, who she lost to in a three-set match in the fall, with a straight-set 6-0, 6-1 triumph at the top flight. On the fifth court, Johnson put the Privateers one point away from clinching the win with a 6-0, 6-1 score of her own over Marlene Maier while Luethi sealed the contest with a 6-2, 6-0 victory at the second position over Anastasia Vaganova.

Playing at the fourth slot, Gilhespie claimed her first victory of the spring campaign with a 6-2, 6-1 decision over Natalia Parchowska while sophomore Paula Garriga ended the afternoon with a 6-3, 6-2 triumph over Klavdija Bukovec.

The Privateers are back in action on Saturday, Feb. 4, when they host reigning A-SUN champions The University of North Florida at noon.
