Doubles Victory Propels Women's Tennis To 4-3 Victory Over Southeastern Louisiana

Privateers open homestand with victory

NEW ORLEANS –
The University of New Orleans women's tennis team kicked off a four-match homestand on Saturday afternoon against Southland Conference foe Southeastern Louisiana, besting the visiting Lions 4-3.

In the victory, the Privateers claimed the doubles point for the first time in four matches with wins on courts two and three.

"We did enough to get the victory today," head coach Burzis Kanga said. "We finally got over our slump in doubles, which turned out to be what got us the overall victory."

New Orleans (7-3, 2-1 Southland Conference) lost at the top doubles flight 6-1, but the duo if senior Anna Segarra Rius and sophomore Brittany Johnson kept the doubles point up for grabs with a 6-3 victory on court three. The second slot, the deciding court for the doubles point, went into a tiebreaker tied 6-6, with sophomore Trang Dao and senior Yasmine Rashad prevailing 7-3 to win 7-6.

In singles play, Southeastern Louisiana (3-6, 0-3 Southland Conference) knotted up the overall score with a 6-2, 6-2 victory against junior Anja Luethi at the second slot and took the overall lead with a 4-6, 6-0, 6-1 win on court five against Johnson.

Dao won at the top flight 7-6 (7-3), 1-6, 6-2 to retie it up at 2-all, while a 3-6, 6-4, 6-2 victory for freshman Claudette Gilhespie at the fourth flight moved the Privateers one match away from clinching the contest. UNO won the match on court six, where Rashad bested her Southeastern counterpart in three sets 3-6, 6-4, 6-4. With the match already decided, Rius dropped her match at the third slot 6-2, 4-6, 6-4.

UNO's homestand continues on Sunday, Mar. 12 against Rhode Island, who has yet to win a match this spring. Southland Conference continues on Friday, Mar. 17 against Stephen F. Austin with Northwestern State wrapping up the homestand on Sunday, Mar. 19.
