NEW ORLEANS – Winners of their last six matches, including three Southland Conference victories, the University of New Orleans women's tennis team hits the road to take on Abilene Christian on Saturday, Mar. 25 at 10:44 a.m. in a contest between two of the top teams in the conference this season.
Against Abilene Christian, UNO is 0-3 all-time, but besting opponents the Privateers have had problems with in the past has been the story of the current winning streak with victories against Stephen F. Austin and Northwestern State last weekend.
"We have been playing great tennis lately," head coach
Burzis Kanga said. "Last weekend we defeated two teams that have given us problems the past couple of seasons. When we play with the right mentality we can compete with anyone, and lately they have been showing it. We have to be consistent and prove to ourselves that we can get the job done on the road."
Junior
Anja Luethi leads New Orleans (10-3, 4-1 Southland Conference) with 16 combined victories, eight in singles and eight in doubles, while freshman
Claudette Gilhespie boasts a team-best nine victories in singles action. In doubles play, the duo of Luethi and senior
Anna Segarra Rius are undefeated at the top flight with a 5-0 record.
Like the Privateers, Abilene Christian (13-4, 5-1 Southland Conference) enters the game on a six-match winning streak, with all five of their league victories coming in the streak. Sarah Adams leads the Wildcats with 14 victories in singles play and 12 in doubles for 26 combined victories while Erin walker has a team-best 13 victories in doubles play with 11 triumphs in singles action for 22 total wins.
Following the conference match, UNO takes a break from league play with a road match at Jackson State on Wednesday, Mar. 29. The Privateers return to the Lakefront on Friday, Mar. 31 when they host Middle Tennessee.
