Women's Tennis Finishes Regular Season With Pair Of Home Matches

Privateers host Sam Houston State on Thursday, Lamar on Saturday

NEW ORLEANS – The University of New Orleans women's tennis team wraps up the 2017 regular season this weekend with a pair of home matches, starting with Sam Houston State on Thursday at 2 p.m. and followed by Lamar on Saturday. Prior to the 11 a.m. match against Lamar, the Privateers will honor their senior class Anna Segarra Rius, Yasmine Rashad and Luis Albuquerque from the men's team.

New Orleans (13-7, 5-4 Southland Conference) heads into the crucial two matches sitting in a tie with Sam Houston for the sixth seed in the Southland Conference Championship. Sophomore Trang Dao leads the Privateers with 14 wins in singles play, all at the top position, with 11 triumphs in doubles play for a total of 25. Junior Anja Luethi also boasts double-digit totals in both singles and doubles play, recording a team-high 12 wins in doubles with 13 in singles for 25 combined.

"We have a big weekend ahead of us," head coach Burzis Kanga said. "Sam Houston and Lamar are both good teams that can beat you if you don't come in prepared. We have to go out there and execute and finish the season strong."

Sam Houston State (8-11, 5-4 Southland Conference) went 1-1 last weekend, besting Nicholls 6-1 before losing to McNeese 6-1. Khee Yen Wee leads the Bearkats with 20 total victories, 11 coming in singles action, while Mila Milanovic and Carrie Casey both have a team-high nine wins in doubles play, with the two posting seven at the top doubles position.

Lamar (14-7, 6-3 Southland Conference) plays Southeastern Louisiana before coming to the Lakefront for both sides' season finale, finishing its home slate last weekend with a 2-5 loss against McNeese and a 7-0 win against Nicholls. Jasmine Buchta boasts a team-best 26 combined victories with 14 coming in doubles action, while Katya Lapayeva has a team-high 16 wins in singles play, all at the top flight, and nine wins at the first doubles position for 25 combined victories.  

The Southland Conference Championship begins on Friday, April 28 in Beaumont, Texas.
