Box Score New Orleans - The New Orleans Privateers women's tennis team (0-1) had a belated rally in doubles fall short in a 4-0 loss to the Tulane Green Wave on Sunday afternoon at City Park.
The Green Wave took the first match 6-1 at the two spot in doubles. It was up to the outer courts and the Privateers were down 5-1 and 5-2 at one and three doubles respectively. That's when the freshman tandem of
Lea Alguacil and
Mar Gendra executed a service hold and a break to cut the lead to 5-4. However, the Green Wave's third pair won the next game and finished the doubles point.
At the top spot in doubles,
Trang Dao and
Anja Luethi were in the midst of a rally from 5-1 down to 5-3. The Privateers' top pair was at deuce and threatening to break serve again when the doubles point was decided.
"We played a solid team," said Coach
Burzis Kanga. I thought in some spots in singles we performed well. We started off slow, but I think we played Tulane as well as we could. I think we can only get better. It's a little early, but as long as we can grow from this loss we'll be fine."
In singles, the Privateers stretched the Green Wave in spots, but were defeated at two, three, and five singles to seal the match. Laura Fabrizi earned the match winning point at number two singles for Tulane.
The rest of the matches went unfinished. Alguacil was up a set at six.
Yurina Asai was into the third set. Dao was on the brink of leveling her match up at a set apiece.
New Orleans will play three matches in Florida next weekend. They'll take on North Florida on Friday, Flagler on Saturday, and Florida A&M on Sunday.
