Box Score St. Augustine, Fla. - The New Orleans Privateers women's tennis team (1-2) swept singles play and rallied back after a tough start in doubles to defeat the Flagler Saints on Saturday.
The Saints started by bookending 6-3 wins at the number one and three spots in doubles. The Saints were also leading at number two doubles 5-3 when the first point was sealed in the home team's favor. However, the Privateers quickly turned the tide in singles.
It started with
Brittany Johnson who swept through freshman, Anika Nissen 6-0, 6-0.
Mar Gendra, who moved up a spot in the rotation, responded with a 6-0, 6-2 victory to push the Privateers ahead 2-1 in the match.
Lea Alguacil, who was dealing with a hamstring injury, took her second set easily and won in straight sets at number six to put the Privateers on the brink of their first spring victory.
The clinching point was won at number two singles. After a strong day against North Florida on Friday,
Anja Luethi coasted to a 6-2, 6-3 victory over Alessandra Traub. The other two matches played out to the finish as well.
"It was night and day from yesterday to today," said Coach
Burzis Kanga. "I couldn't be more proud of our team knowing we have some health issues. I don't think we could have competed any better than we did today."
Trang Dao finished her match with a 6-4, 7-5 victory at the top spot in singles.
Yurina Asai rallied back from a set down to win the second set 7-5. She took the tiebreaking set 10-5 to clinch a sweep of singles play for the Privateers.
