NATCHITOCHES, La. - The University of New Orleans women's basketball team heads to northwest Louisiana with visions of a six-game winning streak when they face the Lady Demons of Northwestern State in Natchitoches, Louisiana, Wednesday, January 31 at Prather Coliseum.
New Orleans (11-10, 7-3 SLC) picked up their fifth straight win last Saturday with a convincing, 72-45 decision over UIW in San Antonio, Texas. The last time the Privateers met Northwestern State (6-14, 1-8 SLC) was one week ago, an 81-63 New Orleans win at Lakefront Arena.
Currently, UNO, picked fourth in preseason conference polls, is fifth in the Southland Conference standings.
Senior guard
Randi Brown continues her sterling play for the Privateers averaging 22.3 points a game---good enough for 10
th among NCAA Division I scorers nationally and 1
st in the Southland Conference. Brown is also 4
th in the SLC in free throws (.851), 3
rd in steals (2.5) and 3
rd in 3-pointers (2.6).
The Houma, Louisiana native has moved into the top ten all-time among Southland Conference scorers at 9
th place with 1.939 points. Lisa Ingram (1983-86) of Louisiana-Monroe is the conference's all-time scoring leader with 2,601 points.
With 12 points against UIW,
Kayla Mundy has reached double figures 9 out of 10 games and averages 10.8 points a contest. Mundy leads New Orleans in free throw shooting hitting 52-of-60 (.867) good enough for 2
nd in the SLC.
Junior center
Shania Woods hopes to add to her seven double-doubles this season. The Houston, Texas native averages 11.0 an outing and 8.2 points a game. Her .475 shooting percentage is 4
th best in the Southland.
Junior point guard
Mariah Wright leads the Privateers in assists with 3.2 a contest and she's grabbing 2.0 steals a game.
Northwestern State will rely on junior guard Nautica Grant for scoring (10.8), and Libba Gilliam (10.2) the Lady Demons are 3
rd in the Southland Conference in steals with 230 this season, that's an average of 11.9 a game.
The next time the Privateers hit the court will be Saturday, February 3, versus Nicholls at Lakefront Arena at 2 p. m. It will be Senior Day and it's the first game of a doubleheader. The UNO and Nicholls men's teams will meet at 4:15.
