New Orleans- Fresh off their first road win of the season, the University of New Orleans women's basketball team will try to make it two-in-a-row away from home when they face nationally ranked Miami, Sunday, Dec. 9, at the Watsco Center in Miami. Tipoff is Noon.
Â
New Orleans (3-3) defeated Memphis on the road, Tuesday, 66-59, thanks to a strong defensive effort holding the Tigers to only 9 points in the third period to snatch the win.
Â
Privateer head coach
Keeshawn Davenport likes the significance of the victory away from Lakefront Arena.
Â
"The win on the road was important because it followed up a good performance against Rice and the way they played in Memphis showed continued improvement.  It was important because it showed that the way they played in the Rice game was not a fluke. It really shows that we are moving in the right direction"
Â
Senior
Shania Woods led the way for the Privateers against Memphis with her first double-double of the season, 14 points and 13 rebounds. The Houston, Texas native leads UNO in scoring (14.2) and rebounds (8.7). Her 13-rebound effort against Memphis was an individual and team-high for the season.
Â
Traya Bruce matched her career-high in points with another 16-point-outing against Memphis---matching her single-game output in the loss to Rice. The freshman is the club's second-leading scorer averaging 10 points a contest and she's an 84% shooter from the free throw line.
Â
Point guard
Jada Duncantell had a solid outing against Memphis, 6 points, 5 assists, 4 steals and 0 turnovers in 19 minutes of play.
Â
"Jada has been solid in her contribution," said Davenport. She's not a vocal leader at point guard but she leads by her actions. She brings the kind of defensive pressure we need with her quick hands.  Any time a point guard has no turnovers on a stat line that's what you want."
Â
The Hurricanes are currently 7-2 and have reached the NCAA Tournament seven of the last eight seasons. Last year they defeated UNO 76-46 at the Watsco Center in Miami.
Â
"It's a tougher opponent but the focus is still on us. They are well-rounded, they score inside or outside, they penetrate, they shoot the three.  They are just a good well-rounded, well-coached team. If Lamar can beat Texas A&M, if we stick to the game plan and don't panic, who knows what can happen."
Â
Miami is ranked 23
rd in the USA Today Coaches and 25
th in the Associated Press national college basketball poll.Â
