Box Score New Orleans - The New Orleans Privateers women's tennis team (2-3) got off to a strong start, but were edged out in singles in a 4-3 loss to South Alabama (5-0) on Friday afternoon at the University Tennis Center.
After the Privateers opened by winning the doubles point, South Alabama rallied back in singles. The Jaguars took the first three singles matches and a straight set victory at the number five spot finished the proceedings in favor of the road side.
Anja Luethi and
Lea Alguacil both won their matches in singles. Luethi went to 4-1 on the season in singles after winning 6-2, 7-5. Alguacil was fully stretched, winning the first set in a tiebreaker and losing the second set. Alguacil won the deciding third set 10-5 to grab the final point for New Orleans.
"This was by far the closest match we have played against South Alabama," said Coach
Burzis Kanga. "Doubles played well against a good South Alabama team. Anja played terrific and Lea also played a good match in singles."
The Privateers got off to a positive start by winning the doubles point. New Orleans gained control early on the outer courts.
Trang Dao and Luethi jumped to a 4-1 lead at number one doubles and cruised to a 6-2 victory. South Alabama countered with a victory at the two spot in doubles.
At number three,
Mar Gendra and
Lea Alguacil built a 5-2 lead over Alexandra Stiteler and Nikola Kohoutova. The Jaguars tandem came back to cut the lead to 5-4, but Alguacil and Gendra would not be denied. The freshman tandem took the next game to seal the doubles point.
