New Orleans - The New Orleans Privateers women's tennis team will close out what turned out to be a light February schedule in number of matches due to postponements with two bouts versus SWAC schools. New Orleans will travel to Southern on Wednesday and host Jackson State to begin March on Thursday.
The Privateers (2-3) have gotten to play just two matches in February to date. New Orleans swept Loyola 7-0 on Feb. 2 and lost a close match 4-3 to South Alabama on Feb. 16. Both of these matches were slated to play earlier in the month, but got postponed from their original dates.
Anja Luethi has played very well in singles. The senior picked up another victory at number two singles to run her spring record to 4-1.
Lea Alguacil has also provided a spark for the Privateers at number six singles with a 3-1 record. In doubles, Alguacil and
Mar Gendra have won back-to-back matches.
Trang Dao and Luethi have won both of their matches at number one doubles.
"I think we're playing well in some spots and we've had a good week of conditioning," said Coach
Burzis Kanga. "I think we should be ready for the challenge. We have to just take one match at a time and we can't underestimate anyone."
The Privateers are in the teeth of a home heavy stretch. Following Wednesday's match in Baton Rouge against the Jaguars, four of the next five matches will be played at home. That includes the conference opener on Mar. 3 against McNeese.
Southern (1-3) finished their first weekend of conference play with a split. The Jaguars lost 4-2 at Alabama State, but bounced back the next day to defeat Jackson State 4-2. Southern has not won a doubles match through their first four contests.
Jackson State (1-3) led off their conference slate with a 4-0 win over Mississippi Valley State before falling to Southern last Saturday. The Tigers also lost both ends of a doubleheader against Alabama on Jan. 13. Tyler Smith at number one singles and Nina Zhang at number three, won both of their individual matches over the first conference weekend.
