Women's Tennis Tops Southern in Gilhespie's Return to Lineup

Box Score New OrleansClaudette Gilhespie returned to the lineup in doubles and the New Orleans Privateers women's tennis team (3-3) overwhelmed the Southern Jaguars 6-1 on Wednesday in Baton Rouge.

Gilhespie slid into the two spot in doubles along with teammate, Yurina Asai. The duo worked together to cruise to a 6-1 victory. New Orleans wound up clinching the opening point of the afternoon with a 6-2 victory at number one doubles, generated by Trang Dao and Anja Luethi.

"I think we played well," said Coach Burzis Kanga. "We started off strong in doubles. It was good to have Claduette back and she is just getting back into form. Overall we need to work on a few things and come back for Jackson State on Thursday."

The Privateers continued their strong hold on the match into singles. Lea Alguacil was the first to finish, wrapping up a straight set victory at number six singles. Four of the five matches the Privateers won in singles were taken in straight sets.

Luethi continued her strong start to the spring by coasting to another straight set victory, 6-3, 6-0. That put the Privateers up 3-0 and on the verge of clinching the match result. The deciding point was earned by Asai who won 6-3, 6-1 at number four to seal the match for New Orleans.

The rest of the matches played out with the result in hand. Dao also won in straight sets by a 6-4, 6-3 score line. Mar Gendra had to rally back and was pushed to the limit, but the freshman prevailed. After losing the first set 6-2, Gendra fired back with a 6-3 win in set two. The tiebreaking set went to Gendra by a 10-7 score.

New Orleans will have a short turnaround when they return to the University Tennis Center to take on Jackson State. The match is scheduled for a 1 p.m. start.
