Dao, Luethi Rally in Doubles, Women's Tennis Defeats Jackson State

Box Score New OrleansTrang Dao and Anja Luethi commenced a tremendous rally in doubles as the New Orleans Privateers women's tennis team defeated the Jackson State Tigers 6-1 on Thursday afternoon at the University Tennis Center.

Dao and Luethi trailed 3-0 at number one doubles and were down 40-0 in the next game. The Privateers' top tandem turned the match momentum around by rallying to take the game. The rest of the match went Luethi and Dao's way to give the Privateers the first match in doubles. Claudette Gilhespie and Yurina Asai followed closely behind with a 6-2 win in doubles to seal the first point.

"I like the way we came back at number one doubles," said Coach Burzis Kanga. "I keep telling the players it's never over until it's over and you have to keep fighting. That match was a momentum changer as far as I'm concerned and we competed really well today. We've had two good matches to get ready for McNeese on Saturday."

In singles, the back of the Privateers' rotation was dominant. Asai, Mar Gendra, and Lea Alguacil all jumped out to 3-0 leads in the first set. The trio continued to control the pace, all winning in straight sets. Alguacil swept her first set and wound up winning 6-0, 6-2. Asai won 6-0, 6-1 and Gendra engineered a 6-1, 6-2 win. Alguacil earned the deciding point for New Orleans.

Gilhespie was the first off the court in singles for New Orleans. In her first singles match of the spring, Gilhespie defeated her opponent 6-2, 6-0 at number three singles. With the match decided, Luethi won her match to notch the last point for New Orleans.

Luethi won her first set 6-2 and steadily pulled away in the second set, winning 6-3. The victory is Luethi's fifth straight in singles.

With the win, New Orleans capped off a 2-0 week against the SWAC after defeating Southern 6-1 on Wednesday in Baton Rouge. The Privateers will next hit the court on Saturday at 1 p.m. when they open Southland play against McNeese at the University Tennis Center.
