Box Score Hammond - The New Orleans Privateers women's tennis team (6-4, 1-1 Southland) won the doubles point, which proved to be the difference in a 4-3 victory over the Southeastern Lions (3-7, 0-2) on Saturday at Southeastern Tennis Courts.
The Lions' number two tandem of Dalina Dalhmans and Ximena Yanez were first off the court with a 6-0 victory. However, the Privateers took the outer courts to seal the first point of the day.
Trang Dao and
Anja Luethi rallied back from an early 3-2 deficit to win 6-3 and push the deciding doubles match to number three.
Brittany Johnson and
Lea Alguacil were up 3-2 when they executed a service break to push their lead to two games. After the two sides traded the next two games, Johnson and Alguacil were on serve to try to close out the point. Down 15-40, the Privateers' number three pair rallied all the way back to win the match and the doubles marker.
"The doubles point was critical for us and it was the biggest point of the day," said Coach
Burzis Kanga. "We need to go back and work harder. At times and in some spots we were okay. We just have to go back, regroup, and get ready for NJIT."
In singles, Southeastern got their first point at number four singles with a straight set victory. New Orleans took the next two matches when Dao won in convincing fashion at 6-1, 6-2. Luethi followed with a 6-3, 6-4 victory to put New Orleans on the verge of victory.
Southeastern battled back with a straight set victory at number five singles. Shortly after,
Claudette Gilhespie clinched the match for the Privateers. After falling behind 5-4 in the second set, Gilhespie won the next three games to give New Orleans their first conference win of the season in their second Southland match.
The Privateers return home to face NJIT on Thursday, Mar. 15. The match is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m.
