Box Score 2 NEW ORLEANS - The University of New Orleans (7-4) earned the doubles point and cruised to a 7-0 victory over New Jersey Institute of Technology (6-6) Thursday afternoon at the University Tennis Center. Singles play showcased clutch play with four tiebreaking sets going in favor of the Privateers.
On the men's side, New Orleans (4-5) fell to the University of South Alabama (9-5) 7-0 in Mobile, Alabama.
WOMEN'S RESULTS
DOUBLES
A quick 6-2 win by
Trang Dao and
Anja Luethi in No. 1 was followed by a Highlanders win at No. 3 to make doubles No. 2 the doubles point clincher.
Claudette Gilhespie and
Yurina Asai were up to the task in foreshadowing the rest of the match as the duo took a tiebreaking thriller 7-6 (7-4) to earn the doubles point for UNO.
SINGLES
Luethi was dominant Thursday making quick work in No. 2, 6-4, 6-3. Asai's 7-5, 6-2 win in No. 4 made it 3-0 UNO as the other four singles matches saw a back and forth between the Privateers and Highlanders.
Brittany Johnson extended the New Orleans lead and clinched the match victory with a 7-6 (7-3), 6-2 win in flight No. 6. For good measure, Dao (2-6, 7-6 (7-4), (10-4) in No. 1),
Lea Alguacil (2-6, 6-4, 10-5 in No. 5) and Gilhespie (7-6 (7-5), 6-4 in No. 3) completed the singles sweep as UNO blanked NJIT 7-0.
The win improved the Silver and Blue's record to 4-2 at the University Tennis Center.
MEN'S RESULTS
Nicolas Kramer threatened in flight No. 4 before falling to Lucas Gonzales 7-6 (8-6), 6-2 as one of the region's top teams improved to 5-1 at home.
NEXT UP
The women resume Southland Conference play in the Lone Star State Saturday at noon versus Stephen F. Austin State University while the men return to the Big Easy to host NJIT Saturday at 1 p.m.
