KINGSVILLE, Texas – Day one of the Emerald Beach Hotel Invitational is in the books and the University of New Orleans (2-5) split with a 5-0 victory over Tarleton State University following up a 3-2 loss to Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi (2-3) Saturday afternoon at the Javelina Beach Volleyball Courts.
Kaitlyn Grice and
Jordan Schumacher (No. 4) and
Ally Carr and
Rhyan Rand (No. 5) went 2-0 on the day.
VS THE ISLANDERS – LOSS 3-2
Grice and Schumacher gave New Orleans a 1-0 lead with the 21-12, 21-19 victory at No. 4 and Carr and Rand followed with a 21-18, 21-18 W to put the Privateers in the driver's seat.
However, A&M-Corpus Christi was able to secure victories in the top three flights to defeat UNO 3-2 in the first of two matches this season.
VS THE TEXANNS – WIN 5-0
Making their debut as a varsity sport, Tarleton State was no match for New Orleans with the Privateers dominating their way to a sweep.
Schumacher and Grice took No. 4 21-17, 21-10, and Rand/Carr made quick work at No. 5 21-18, 21-14 with No. 1-3 taking the court next.
Victoria Corcoran and
Veronica Corcoran clinched the W for UNO with a 21-11, 21-13 win in No. 2 with
Madison Miller and
Brianna Vega following with a 21-15, 21-11 win at No. 3. In the top spot,
Cara Sander and
Rachel Kuhn defeated Blanca Izquierdo and Adriana Darthuy 21-15, 21-12.
NEXT UP
The Privateers take on host Texas A&M University-Kingsville (9-5) at 9 a.m. Sunday before concluding the two-day tournament versus first-year program Ottawa University (0-2) at 1 p.m.
