Box Score Thibodaux, La. - The New Orleans Privateers women's tennis team (8-6, 2-3) bounced back with a strong match in a 5-2 win over the Nicholls Colonels on Tuesday afternoon at the Colonel Tennis Complex.
Yurina Asai and
Claudette Gilhespie got the day started for the Privateers with a dominant 6-0 win in doubles at flight two. The victory was the sixth in eight matches for the tandem and pushed New Orleans to the brink of winning the first point.
That feat was eventually achieved when
Trang Dao and
Anja Luethi outmatched Stephanie Barnett and Mariia Kozachok 6-3 to bank the first point for New Orleans.
Lea Alguacil and
Mar Gendra were also comfortably ahead at 5-2 in their doubles match when the point was decided.
New Orleans struck first in singles with
Brittany Johnson. The junior coasted to a 6-1, 6-3 win at flight five to put New Orleans ahead 2-0. Nicholls responded when Barnett rallied to a three-set win over Dao at flight one.
The Privateers got the next point with Luethi at flight two. Luethi won in straight sets, taking a 6-4, 6-2 victory. Nicholls responded right back with a win at flight three to narrow the gap to 3-2, but the Privateers could not be denied on this day.
Asai wrapped up the proceedings at flight four. After winning 6-1 in the first set, Asai was pushed by Marina Vigil. However, Asai prevailed 7-5 in the second set to give the Privateers the clinching point. With the match done, Gendra notched the fifth point in the last match to finish. She won a 6-1,7-6 decision.
The win wrapped up a 1-2 road swing for New Orleans. They will return to the University Tennis Center on Saturday to face Abilene Christian. The match is set for 2 p.m.
