Box Score New Orleans – The New Orleans Privateers women's tennis team (5-4, 0-1 Southland) dominated in doubles on their way to a 6-1 victory over SIU-Edwardsville on Thursday afternoon at the University Tennis Center.
Lea Alguacil was paired with
Brittany Johnson on the day and the tandem overwhelmed Anna Talley and Angel Ikeda 6-0 to earn the first doubles match.
Claudette Gilhespie and
Yurina Asai were not far behind as they continued their strong stride in doubles. The pair won 6-1 to seal the first point for the home side.
Trang Dao and
Anja Luethi capped off a sweep of doubles matches with a 6-2 victory.
"It was one of those matches where we were on top from the beginning," said Coach
Burzis Kanga. "Overall we played well."
In singles, the Privateers continued to flex their muscle. Alguacil picked up her sixth win of the spring campaign in convincing fashion with a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Ikeda. The next point was earned at number four singles when Asai also topped her opponent, Katherine Lahue 6-0, 6-0.
New Orleans earned the victory with the next match to finish. Johnson swept her first set over Talley and earned the second set by a 6-1 score to give the Privateers the win and put them back on the plus side of .500 heading into a conference match against Southeastern this weekend.
The Privateers also earned singles wins at the top two slots in the rotation. Luethi continued her strong singles season in the spring with a 6-1, 6-1 victory. Dao followed with a 6-3, 6-3 victory at number one singles. The Cougars got a point back at number three singles.
New Orleans will make the short trip to Hammond to take on Southeastern on Saturday. The match is scheduled for a 12 p.m. start.
