McKinney, Texas- Despite windy conditions, Max Hellstrom shot the low score  for the University of New Orleans Privateers during the opening round of the Southland Conference Golf Championship at Stonebridge Ranch Country Club in McKinney, Texas.

The sophomore from Stockholm, Sweden shot a nine under par 81 over the par 72, 7,219 yard course---the most difficult course the Privateers have played this season.

"Max led us today by sticking with the gameplan and he did not have a double-bogey," said head coach Jeff Lorio.  "Even though he did struggle on the greens, he grinded it out and kept the ball in pretty good positions all day."

New Orleans had a day-one team-score of 49-over, 337, 48 strokes behind team leader Sam Houston State.

UNO's number two player, Ulisess de Toledo shot a 12-over 84.  Parker Johnson, a freshman from Baton rouge carded a 14-over 86.  He was joined at 14-over by junior Jackson SmithBrady Bennett a freshman from Zachary, Louisiana came in at 19-over, 91.

"The good news is we've got 36 holes to get back in this and the good news is, we can.  The goal is to go out there and manage our game, put up some good numbers and catch some teams,  We have got to find a way to get better when conditions are bad," said Lorio.

The Privateers tee off Tuesday morning at 7:30 a.m.
