Azalea City Classic Next for Cross Country

MOBILE, Ala. – After a solid showing at the Nicholls Cross Country Invitational last week, the University of New Orleans cross country teams head to Mobile for the Azalea City Classic, Friday, Sept. 7, at Brookley Gulf Pines Golf Course.

Last week saw outstanding performances in Thibodaux, Louisiana by young Privateers. Freshman Nicholas Phillips, out of New Iberia, Louisiana, finished second overall in a field of 28 runners as he covered the 6k course in 21:31.49.

Arina Kleshchukova, also a freshman, was also second on the women's side. Competing in a cross country event for the first time, Kleshchukova turned in a time of 16:22.30.

Brian Johnson, head track and field /cross country coach, is hoping for better weather conditions this week in Mobile.

"With the weather we've had, I hope it's drier than last week. It was like running in "pig slop" out there.  But I was proud of them, they never complained, they got in there and ran through it."

The Azalea City Classic, hosted by the University of South Alabama, will feature teams from Alabama State, Mobile, Southern, Spring Hill, Troy, Marion Military Institute and the host Jaguars.

This week, the distances will be longer with the men set at 8k and the women 5k.

"I think they are coming along as a group," said Johnson. "They are putting in the mileage and I'm sure as the season goes along, the fitness level will start to show."
