Birmingham, Alabama- The 2019 indoor track and field season for the University of New Orleans opens Friday, January 11, in Birmingham, Alabama at the Birmingham Crossplex Arena in the UAB Blazer Invitational.
It will mark the start of the first indoor track and field season under the direction of head coach
Brian Johnson. Field events start at 8 a. m. running events start at 11 a. m.
"I'm a little nervous but once I get there I'll be fine," said Johnson, a member of the 2008 U. S. Olympic Team. "I can't wait to get there and get those competitive juices flowing for my athletes and myself."
New Orleans will be well-represented in Birmingham with a total of 31 student-athletes competing in the first indoor meet of the season.
More than 15 schools will send team to Birmingham, including Georgia whose women's team won the 2018 NCAA Indoor Championships and the Bulldog men who captured the 2018 NCAA Outdoor crown.
"I'll use this meet to find out who I can count on, who has done what they were supposed to do on the break. We'll find out who we can count on in time of need." Johnson continued, "It could be a leg on the 4X4 to see who's been doing what. Competition and practice are two totally different things so we'll get a better understanding of who they are as athletes."
