Birmingham, Alabama- A couple of school-records in field events fell when the University of New Orleans track and field teams competed in the KMS Invitational Track and Field Meet Sunday at the Birmingham Crossplex Arena in Birmingham, Alabama.
Freshman thrower Vojislav Gvero, of Belgrade, Serbia, set the school mark in the men's weight throw with a toss of 59 feet.
Danielle Lorenz, of Dardanelle, Arkansas broke the women's indoor shot put school standard with an effort of 47' 3".
Lorenz bettered the mark set in 2006 of 46' 6.25" by Felicia Yearwood.
"Voya (Gvero) has a lot more left in the tank," said track coach
Brian Johnson. "I'm ecstatic! He's just a freshman and this mark positions him well in the conference. One of the reasons we brought him in was we thought he could be a high point scorer for us."
"Danielle is getting it together in the shot put. That's her event and she is on path to better her personal record before we get outdoors."
In the men's long jump, school-record holder
Michael Strong's leap of 23' 2" was good enough for second place. In the distances,
Aaron Albert, a senior from Los Alomitos, California was second in the men's mile with a clocking of 4:17.1 while sophomore
Lucas Marcello finished seventh at 4:32.88.
In the men's 3,000 meter run, senior
Mark Golay turned in a personal record of 9:05.88. Freshman
Chandler Sullivan was not far behind with a clocking of 9:06.77.
JaNai Cameron continues to lower her time in the 400 meter run with a performance of 57.97.
"We're just getting better as an overall unit and that's all we can ask. We continue to see improvement all the time. We're just looking forward to conference and we'll see where we stand."
