Women's Tennis Off to Best Start Since '03 After Two Wins Sunday

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 NEW ORLEANS – The New Orleans Privateers women's tennis team (6-0) secured their best spring start since 2003 with another pair of victories on Sunday. New Orleans swept Prairie View A&M 7-0 and beat a shorthanded Louisiana Tech 4-0.

NEW ORLEANS-7 PRAIRIE VIEW A&M-0
The day started with a sweep over the Prairie View A&M Panthers. Lea Alguacil and Claudette Gilhespie got the sweep kicked off with a 6-0 win in flight three doubles. The Privateers' top two pairings each won their doubles match by a break.

New Orleans did not drop a set in singles. Ank Vullings was first off the court. She won the first set 6-0 and was winning the second set when her opponent retired from the match. Trang Dao was next off the court. The senior ran her singles record to 5-0 on the young season with a 6-2, 6-3 win.

Gilhespie earned the match clinching point with a 6-1, 6-4 victory at flight two. Salma Abdelrahim, Mar Gendra, and Brittany Johnson all earned singles points as well. Gendra also remained undefeated in singles (5-0) after the morning tilt.

NEW ORLEANS-4 LOUISIANA TECH-0
The Privateers started with a two-point advantage against a shorthanded La. Tech squad that only brought four players. New Orleans needed just one match to seal the doubles point and Vullings and Dao obliged.

New Orleans' top pair trailed 4-3 but won the next three games to clinch what wound up being the third point of the match.

In singles, the Privateers got early momentum from Abdelrahim and Gendra who won their first sets. It was Gendra who earned the match clinching point after she won the last three games of her match at flight four.

FROM COACH KANGA
"I think we played well. Give credit to the players after playing four matches in two days. This weekend shows me that they can do that. I think we're in a good place and we executed well across the board. We did what we had to do and got the job done."

NEXT UP
The Privateers will next face Spring Hill on Feb. 23. The match is slated for an 11 a.m. start at the University Tennis Center.
