Women's Tennis Starts Conference Play at Stephen F. Austin

NEW ORLEANS – The second season begins for the New Orleans Privateers women's tennis team on Friday. The 6-1 Privateers make the trip to Nacgodoches, Texas to take on the Stephen F. Austin Ladyjacks on Friday. The match is scheduled for a 2 p.m. start.

The Privateers' scheduled midweek tilt against South Alabama was washed out on Tuesday and will not be made up. New Orleans will be on the road for the first conference weekend which also encompasses a Sunday morning bout against Sam Houston State.

New Orleans has been solid in doubles, taking the opening point in six of the seven matches this year. Collectively, the Privateers' tandems that have hit the court in 2019 have a 16-3 record. Trang Dao and Ank Vullings are 3-0 at flight one while Salma Abdelrahim and Brittany Johnson have a 4-1 mark at flight two.

"The chemistry so far has worked pretty well in our favor," said Coach Burzis Kanga. "I think T.K. and Ank have the potential to be first team all-conference but you have to execute a game plan week in and week out to be effective. Salma and Brittany add a lot to the mix as well. I'm happy with where we are in doubles."

New Orleans is 2-5 all-time against Stephen F. Austin but the last four matches have been split between the two sides. Stephen F. Austin won last year's meeting 5-2. The Privateers won by the same score in their most recent triumph over the Ladyjacks which came in 2017.

The Ladyjacks (2-3) have lost three straight. After opening with wins against Alcorn State and Jackson State, losses have since occurred against Houston, UTSA, and Texas State. In that stretch, Stephen F. Austin won two points (both against UTSA).

Armelle Cerdan leads Stephen F. Austin in singles victories this spring. She has a 3-1 mark at flight four. Collectively, the doubles pairings for SFA have gone 7-7 so far this spring.
