Birmingham, Alabama- Pole vaulter Jordan Courtois continues to better her own school-mark while women's shot put record-holder Danielle Lorenz did not reach her school record but she did come up with her first win of the indoor season.
It was a couple of the highlights for the University of New Orleans track and field teams during day two of the Samford Bulldog Open at the Birmingham Crossplex in Birmingham, Alabama.
Courtois, a senior from New Iberia, Louisiana cleared 11'-5.75" exceeding her school-mark set on Feb. 1 at the Bayou Bengal Invitational in Baton Rouge.
Lorenz won the shot put competition in Birmingham with ease. Her effort of 47' 11.75" took the event by nearly 2 feet. The Dardanelle, Arkansas product has broken the school record in the shot twice this season, most recently at the Bayou Bengal Invitational, 48' 6".
In the men's long jump, the Privateers finished 3-4-5. Aaron Worrell led the way at 22' 10". Mike Strong was fourth at 22' 7.75" and Alex Hawkins finished in fifth place at 22' 6.50".
New Orleans had a number of athletes placing high or winning this week. Coach Brian Johnson says that always helps psychologically.
"Just to be able to compete well and finish up there with the competition. For us it helps just to have people placing high in the meet. It gives us motivation going into LSU. It speaks volumes."
In the men's 3,000, both Aaron Albert (8:36.58) and sophomore Lucas Marcello (9:01.94) ran personal records in the event with Albert finishing second in the competition.
"We worked them pretty hard this week while we had some warm weather. I thought the team responded very well so we'll go back to the lab, pray for some warm weather and try to do the same for LSU."
Sophomore high hurdler Harrison Coleman finished a respectable 5th in the men's 60 meter hurdles with a time of 8.50 seconds.
