Women's Tennis Prepares for Three-Match Weekend

NEW ORLEANS – The New Orleans Privateers women's tennis team (7-4) will have a busy weekend with a full slate of matches. The Privateers will host Bradley and Florida A&M on Friday and Sunday respectively. On Saturday, New Orleans will travel to Nicholls.

The Privateers absorbed a pair of losses last weekend, both in conference play. New Orleans lost to Central Arkansas 4-3 and was defeated 6-1 against Northwestern State. In the last of the two matches, Brittany Johnson won both her singles and doubles match.

"We're looking forward to this weekend," said Coach Burzis Kanga. "We're encouraged with the fact that Claudette (Gilhespie) will be back in the lineup. Ank and T.K. are both playing well. We should have a good weekend but we just have to take it one match at a time."

New Orleans has gone 9-15 collectively in singles in Southland matches. The leader in conference wins is Salma Abdelrahim who has gone 3-1. Overall, the Privateers have three student-athletes with six wins: Abdelrahim, Trang Dao, and Mar Gendra.

The weekend starts with a tilt against Bradley whom the Privateers last faced in 2015. New Orleans won that day 6-1. The Privateers' Sunday opponent, Florida A&M is 0-5 against New Orleans. The Privateers have won the last three meetings against Nicholls and are 8-5 against the Colonels.

Bradley most recently came off a loss to nationally ranked Tulsa. The Braves are 9-5 this season with seven of those wins coming at home. Three Braves are in double figures in wins this spring in singles including Bozana Lojpur who is 10-3 at flight two and Sandra Maletin who has a 10-2 mark at flight one.

Nicholls has not won in conference yet. The Colonels are 2-8 overall with an 0-4 mark against Southland opponents. Their victories have come against Prairie View and Jackson State. Antonia Roessli leads the team in singles wins with four.
