DAY ONE RECAP |Â FINAL RESULTS
Lake Charles, Louisiana- Jackson Smith was the only New Orleans golfer to finish under par at the two-day, 54-hole, Lake Charles Toyota Invitational, Tuesday at the Country Club at the Golden Nugget.
The senior continued his solid play with a final round, 1-under 71. He finished at 1-under 215 for the tournament. The Tyler, Texas native recorded an eagle 3 on the par-5, 506-yard, number-one hole. Smith tied for 38
th on the leaderboard.
"It's like a broken record. He's played well all spring," said head coach
Jeff Lorio. "He was consistent, hitting a lot of fairways and greens. That's what you want from a senior and he has proven to be our leader this spring."
Lorio continued, "On Jackson's eagle he hit a two iron on the green to about 10-feet and putted it in for the eagle. It came on the heels of a bogey, so it was good to stop the bleeding and get the momentum going in the right direction."
Max Hellstrom finished at even-par 216 after a final round 1-over 73. The junior had four birdies on the day. Ulisses de Toledo, Jr. also carded four birdies and shot 1-over 73 during the final 18 holes for a 6-over, 222. Freshman
Grayson Gilbert finished at 7-over, 223 for the tournament and
Ryan Fulton came in at 8-over par 224.
"We were a little slow out of the gates today but we re-grouped and finished the last five or six holes pretty good. Overall it was a good tournament with a solid field. We were able to beat some teams that were ahead of us so all-in-all it was a positive week."
Next stop for the Privateers, the Big Texan Invitational, Monday and Tuesday, March 25-26, at the Club at Comanche Trace in Kerrville, Texas. The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley is the host school.
