NEW ORLEANS – The New Orleans Privateers women's tennis team (8-6, 1-3) will have a two-match conference weekend on tap starting on Friday when they face the UIW Cardinals (4-9, 0-5) at the Mabry Tennis Center. The match is scheduled for a 2 p.m. start.
The Privateers are back into conference play for the majority of the season after going 1-2 in a non-conference stretch. New Orleans beat Florida A&M and suffered losses to Bradley and Marshall. Only one non-conference opponent (Tulane) remains on the schedule.
Trang Dao has 18 total wins this spring between singles and doubles (11 doubles, seven singles). Dao's mark in doubles along with
Ank Vullings stands at 8-2. The senior has a 4-1 record against opponents at flight two in singles.
New Orleans enters this weekend in ninth place, a half game behind Southeastern for what would be the final slot in the conference tournament.
"I think we have a good chance to regain our footing in the conference," said Coach
Burzis Kanga. "We'll still have to show up to play but I think we should do well to start the weekend against UIW. As far as Abilene Christian, they're one of the teams to beat in the conference this year."
New Orleans has never lost in five matches against UIW. The Privateers have only conceded five points combined in those five meetings.
UIW is searching for their first conference win after most recently falling 6-1 to Abilene Christian. The Cardinals have come close on a couple of occasions, losing two matches by 4-3 score lines to Sam Houston State and Stephen F. Austin.
The Cardinals reeled off all four of their spring wins in a nine-day stretch from mid to late February. In that span, UIW topped Southern Utah, Louisiana Tech, Trinity, and Laredo CC.
