Three and OHHH! Beach VB Begins HBU Invite with Three Wins

HOUSTON – The University of New Orleans improved to 9-4 in 2019 with victories over Abilene Christian University, the University of New Mexico and the University of Louisiana at Monroe Friday at Third Coast. The Privateers defeated the Wildcats 5-0, the Lobos 4-1 and the Warhawks 3-2 on day one of the HBU Invitational.
 
The nine wins in 2019 set a program record, surpassing last season's total of eight. In their fifth season as an intercollegiate program, UNO has won five of its last seven matches.
 
NEW ORLEANS DEFEATS ABILENE CHRISTIAN 5-0
UNO made quick work of the Wildcats as Rhyan Rand and Madison Miller took No. 4 21-15, 21-19 and Maxine Walsh and Alexa Spartz upended Sofia Resendiz and Lindsey Toney at No. 5 21-15, 21-16 to make it 2-0 UNO.
 
Victoria Corcoran and Ally Carr dominated at No. 3 21-9, 21-12 to clinch the victory for the Privateers.
 
Veronica Corcoran and Rachel Kuhn eased their way to a win at the top spot 21-10 21-14 and Blessing Dunn and Brianna Vega clinched the sweep, taking No. 2 21-15, 21-12.
 
NEW ORLEANS DEFEATS NEW MEXICO 4-1
Rand and Miller defeated Abbey Willison and Emily Nenninger in a marathon No. 4 flight 21-10, 29-27 and Walsh and Spartz rallied from a first-set loss to take a thriller at No. 5 15-21, 21-14, 15-8 to put UNO in the driver's seat.
 
Victoria Corcoran and Carr sealed the victory for the Privateers with the 21-18, 23-21 win at No. 3. Dunn and Vega earned a close win at No. 2 21-17, 21-19.
 
Despite falling at No. 1, Veronica Corcoran and Kuhn took the opening set 21-12.
 
NEW ORLEANS DEFEATS ULM 3-2

It was the first win for New Orleans versus the Warhawks after ULM took the first 10 meetings between the programs.
 
SCOUTING TOMORROW'S OPPONENTS
HBU
New Orleans went 1-4 against HBU last season. The Huskies lead the series 8-1.
 
TEXAS A&M-KINGSVILLE
The Javelinas won the AVCA Small College (Division II) Championship last season in year No. 2 as a program. Under Tanya Allen, TAMUK is 9-7 this season. Last year, the Javelinas defeated the Privateers 4-1 in Kingsville.
 
TAMUK and UNO are 1-1 in the brief history.

New Orleans faces host HBU at 10 a.m. and Texas A&M-Kingsville at 1 p.m. tomorrow at Third Coast.
